This work is composed of 2 parts : the first part deals with the Birds of the King's Menagerie and is illustrated with 23 plates, painted from life and engraved by Nicolas Robert, the second one is the very work of Jonston and is illustrated with 62 plates the author himself.
The 85 plates depict some 900 species of birds and have an explanation text.

One of the most attractive editions of this popular naturalist, combining a translation of his text with illustrations by Nicolas Robert. Robert’s work shows great scientific accuracy and acute powers of observations. This work was published to accompany a work on plants and insects illustrated by Merian.
